Activision Blizzard (ATVI) has had a rough few weeks after Blizzard made the highly controversial decision to suspend Hearthstone pro Chung “blitzchung” Ng for taking a pro-Hong Kong independence stance.

While the company has since reduced the severity of blitzchung’s punishment, gamers continue to blast Activision for its horrendous PR and human rights gaffe.

Last night, things got a little worse for Activision as Riot Games officially revealed “Project A,” an upcoming first-person tactical shooter for PC that will undoubtedly compete with Call of Duty and Overwatch.

“Riot Games is developing a stylish, competitive, character-based tactical shooter for PC, temporarily codenamed Project A,” Riot Games told us in an email. “The game is set on a beautiful near-future Earth and has a lethal cast of characters, each with unique abilities that create tactical opportunities for their gunplay to shine. More information to be revealed in 2020.”

While not much is known about Project A, several brief gameplay gifs posted on Twitter and a YouTube video give off a strong Counter-Strike vibe. However, Project A definitely wants to create a unique FPS experience with a wide range of characters with unique traits that offer tactical advantages, adding a big element of strategy to the game.

Given that Riot Games is widely considered one of the more-liked publishers in the industry, the fact that it is planning to expand beyond its bread-and-butter League of Legends means that there could be significant competition for current and future first-person shooter titles.

That being said, Activision remains fairly dominant in the space, with the latest game Call of Duty: Mobile taking the Western market by storm. Additionally, Riot Games is fully owned by Tencent (TCEHY), potentially creating some of the same issues Activision is currently dealing with.
