According to the announcement, Opera decided to add its cryptocurrency wallet to its PC browser following a swarm of positive feedback after it released its Android wallet last month. The wallet is built on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, enabling users to store funds and access decentralized applications (DApps) directly on their computer.
The combination of both a mobile and desktop wallet platform enables Opera users to securely store and access their crypto without the need of any additional downloads or extensions. This can be done simply by connecting the Opera PC browser with the Opera mobile browser via a QR code, which ultimately enables users to safely store all sensitive passphrases on their mobile devices.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Charles Hamel, product lead of Opera Crypto, emphasized the impact the company’s desktop browser-integrated wallet will have on the current standards for storing crypto.
By adding a crypto wallet directly into the browser, we removed the need for complex extensions or separate apps. Opening up the PC browser to crypto marks Opera’s second step towards making cryptocurrencies and Web 3.0 mainstream.
Opera went public on July 27 after staging an IPO on the Nasdaq. With the public listing, Opera raised $115 million and shares of OPRA are up nearly 12%.
