John McAfee Sicced His Followers on the SEC Chairman and the Emails Are Predictably Amusing
Last June, John McAfee rallied his neophytes to email and call the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Jay Clayton, regarding a proposed CNN debate over initial coin offerings. It didn’t go very well.
Dissatisfied by a June 6 hearing that said the SEC would not change its current rules regarding the classification of initial coin offerings, McAfee tweeted Clayton’s email address and phone number in the hopes that his fellow cryptocurrency enthusiasts would flood the inbox with demands to initiate a debate between the two parties.
The SEC chairman is Jay Clayton. He can be reached by phone at 202-551-2100 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Flood this mother fucker's voice mail and inbox with demands that he debate me. CNN is ready! Show this prick what the crypto community is all about!

Unfortunately, due to the fact that neither the email address or phone number provided by McAfee reached Clayton directly, his followers’ incredulous comments were received and recorded by SEC staff members — and, thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request by BuzzFeed News, we’re able to view 90 of those emails.
Out of myriad comments documented, fan demands included:
“Stop being such a chicken. You secretly know you will lose the debate, that’s why you are avoiding it.”
“You might shy away from the debate due to various official excuses but face it: blockchain and cryptocurrencies are the only way forward and FIAT is stinking; it’s dead already and only needs to fall over like the Berlin wall.”
“Dear sir as a devoted follower of John McAfee it would be a great pleasure in seeing you debate John on all things in the crypto space what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing it would be nice to get your take on it all crypto is going to change the world.”
“With the expansion of power in the US, I would challenge you to accept Mr. McAfee’s offer to debate on CNN.”
“Debate John McAfee… Show your intelligence.”
“John McAfee demands that you debate him.”
“You seem to not be thinking logically about anything.”

McAfee has a complicated relationship with cryptocurrency enthusiasts and regulators following his lifetime of controversy. Between the selling of McAfee antivirus, accusations of murder and bold claims regarding the future price of Bitcoin (BTC), the software mogul’s descent into cryptocurrency began with the launch of McAfee Redemption Units (MRU). The project was quickly diminished following supposed threats from the SEC.
Following the claims, McAfee recorded his concerns regarding the SEC, noting, “If you think that an agency of the US government would not stoop to assassination, kidnapping, threats, then what are you smoking.” He remains a guru and influencer to some 845,000 Twitter followers and Team McAfee has shifted its focus to ‘unhackable’ wallets and drinking 20-30 bottles of wine a day.
