Sony Caves: ‘Fortnite’ Cross-Play to be Enabled for PS4

After months of non-stop backlash, Sony (SNE) has finally caved and will enable cross-play functionality for battle royale smash hit, Fortnite.

The initial decision upset many Fortnite fans as accounts that were once linked to a PlayStation 4 with the Nintendo Switch were blocked. This outcry was largely driven by the fact that PS4 gamers couldn’t access their character skins and other progress when on an Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. After learning of the feedback, Sony CEO Shawn Layden revealed that solutions were being considered.

It seems that a solution has finally come.

“We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community‚Äôs continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution,”¬†says Sony‚Äôs PlayStation chief, John Kodera in an announcement released on Wednesday. “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for¬†Fortnite¬†that will allow for cross-platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.”

Sony has previously blocked cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One for Minecraft and Rocket League, while other industry players like Microsoft and Nintendo continued to endorse the ability. Microsoft and Nintendo recently teamed up to promote cross-play on Minecraft, which added pressure to Sony as fans began to expect the functionality.

In the meantime, Fortnite is developing multiple solutions for users who have multiple accounts across consoles, including an account-merging feature to combine Battle Royale purchases, coming in November. Additionally, the team plans on enabling unlinking a console from one Fortnite account and relinking to another Fortnite account, likely coming in a few days.

With this latest news from PlayStation, it looks like the Fornite ecosystem is about to become even more interconnected.
