ESPN, ABC, and Disney Broadcast Blizzard’s Overwatch League Playoffs
Disney and ESPN have formed an exclusive multi-year broadcasting contract alongside Blizzard that included Wednesday’s playoffs, the Season One’s grand finale, which will take place in New York City’s Barclays Center and Overwatch League Season Two. Further plans to broadcast the Overwatch League World Cup will arrive at a later date. The contract includes a total of 10 hours of competition that will air over 4 networks and 3 days.
All of Wednesday’s matches aired on ESPN, ESPN 2, Disney XD, and ABC networks, which include network applications, such as DisneyNow and ESPN, that broadcast live feeds. Twitch also featured the broadcast.
This broadcast stood as the first esports competition to air on live television during ESPN’s primetime and was the first broadcast of an esports competition to air on ABC. ESPN has aired Blizzard esports events in the past, which included a college-level broadcast of online battle arena game Heroes of the Storm.
The Overwatch League Grand Finals will commence Friday, July 27 at 7:00 PM, and will begin as a best-of-five match on ESPN. The winners will resume competition on Saturday, July 28, at 4:30 PM EDT on ESPN 3. A re-run will follow day two of the grand finals on ESPN 2 at 9:00 PM EDT, with a highlight show airing Sunday, July 29 at 3:00 PM on ABC.
The winners of the world championship will receive a $1 million prize.
