Coinbase Hires Former Fannie Mae Executive as New Chief Legal Officer


In an ongoing push towards growing its leadership team, digital currency exchange Coinbase has hired a new chief legal officer.

Brian Brooks, the former executive vice president, corporate secretary and general counsel of Fannie Mae, will become the company’s top attorney.¬†Brooks has replaced Mike Lempres, who will remain at Coinbase and focus on the company’s government relations.

During Brooks’ time at Fannie Mae, he led a team of 200 employees and developed experience in financial services.¬†With the new role at Coinbase, Brooks will be responsible for working with regulators, in addition to other unspecified responsibilities.

In a recent statement regarding the hiring of Brooks, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong noted, “His arrival is part of our effort to expand our legal, compliance and government affairs capabilities as we head into this next chapter for the company and the cryptocurrency industry as a whole.”

Over the last ten months, Coinbase has hired a wave of new employees, including a vice president for finance, engineering, and communications. The company also just announced the hiring of Michael Li, a former executive at professional social network giant LinkedIn, to take on the role of vice president of data.
